It was a bit wet in Melbourne yesterday morning but that did not stop Yarra Trams in its tracks, very little does. Despite Australia being locked down the Victoria transport network has been operating a full service by road and rail. This is one of the Class A trams which have setteld on to route 78, one of only two routes on the city's extensive tram netowrk not to centure downtown. It does a north south link from Balaclave to North Richmond travelling along Chapel Street, which morphs into Church Street when the road crosses the Yarra River. Chapel Street is a thriving area, the road packed with cafes, restaurants, bars, oubs, night clubs and boutique shopping. The local joke is that it is quicker to walk than to take the tram, but with less commercial activity and less traffic the trams are reaching unprecedented speeds and, as a local comedian quipped this week, you can ask the driver to stop while and wait for you while you nip into a shop on route! Victorians are only allowed out for exercise, shopping and medical visits or to work, if they cannot work from home. That said the numbers using the 78 are - if anything - higher than usual. This probably has not translated into increased revenue. Patrons have to touch on with a pre-paid Myki card and from casual observation up to one in ten passenegers actually use their cards.
