This weekend the Bus & Coach Society of Victoria celebrated the 90th anniversary of the founding of what has become Driver Bus Lines. Officially Driver Brothers started running their bus on April 1st 1931, unofficially on March 31st! Dodging the Easter weekend the celebration this weekend was over two days. On the Saturday enthusiasts were hosted at the Mount Waverley depot and Head Office in the afternoon with the fleet in serried ranks according to vehicle type and some coaches posed for photographers. The Classic Collection featured and one of the many attractions was this GM Silverside, a former United States Greyhound left hand drive coach. At the wheel is Gary Driver who runs the company with is brother Daryl and son, Mark. The Silverside has been awaiting restoration since acquired in 2014. Mechanically it is sound, the last time I saw a Silverside in action was at the centenary event of Greyhound at the Hibbing Museum in August 2011.
On the Sunday the BCSV enjoyed a full day's hospitality at the Hasting depot of Driver Coastal being transferred from Mount Waverley in a newly restored MCI MC8, their Levers Eagle, the Denning decker and a Gold Phoenix Denning coach. More photo opportunities at the depot with impressive vehicle line ups and trips in a variety of vehicles to Stoney Point and Hastings Beach where a BBQ lunch was enjoyed. Back at the depot the birthday was celebrated with a cake officially cut by Daryl Driver.
As we work through updating our Australian Image Galleries, we have held back on Driver Bus Lines so that pictures from the 90th celebration weekend could be included, so you can look forward to more pictures in the months ahead.
