Oxford's Mercedes City Sprinter 45 973 (BU18YRP) is see in the city in July last year. It has just been announced that the app based demand responsive service is to end. The company has found that what was a high profile innovative service simply cannot be run profitably and despite efforts, no funding to maintain the service has been forthcoming. It is concerning that these cheap to run 14 seaters cannot be run at a profit at a time when social distancing is reducing the capacity of conventional buses to something similar. Maybe a COVID safe bus of the future will be a step back in time to the toastrack designs, boarded from either side and with partitions down the middle to provide individual passenger compartments.
