Transdev Melbourne Scania L94UB Volgren CR228L 392
A reminder of the steam trains that used to run from Melbourne's city to the grand seaside resort of St Kilda. The resort has more of a Blackpool feel about it these days, with some of the grander hotels transformed into backpacker hostels. The Transdev Volgren CR228L bodied Scania L94UB of 2004 is on layover by the old station, which is now served by Yarra Trams route 96 and their latest E Class Bombardier trams. The Scania is on one of three routes that meander close to the coast across to Brighton then up to Cheltenham to terminate at Southlands Shopping Centre and date back to the services that used to connect with the steam trains. Things change slowly under franchised services! This is 392 (5292AO) which sat there for some time, and as usual, with the engine running. On Thursday this week I saw sister vehicle 389 (5289AO) turn up and decided to time how long it sat there, setting the timer as I went into the nearby Woolies supermarket. It was still there when I came out. It sat there for over half an hour pumping diesel fumes into the sea air! It was a mild day, clearly the driver needed neither air conditioning or heating. I frequently notice drivers leave their bus with the engine running while they disappear to get a coffee or stretch their legs. From my bus driving days this was not allowed. The possibility of wayward youths boarding the abandoned bus, hopping in the cab and engaging the gears was an accident waiting to happen. Aside from the pollution scenario the photo also features, at a jaunty angle, the Skybus bus stop and the notice suspending the airport service during the COVID pandemic can be seen on the pole.
