AEC Bridgemasters were never sold in large numbers, other than to AEC dominated fleets also dominated by large numbers of low bridges in their areas. To sell a Bridgemaster to a small independent operator was quite notable, though at the time Red Rover were staunch AEC fans. Thus 7 (27WKX) joined the fleet in 1962 - a 76 seat rear loader with the obligatory Park Royal bodywork - reflecting the integral construction - and the characteristic undulating air suspension, which made the conductors feel as though they had done a turn on the cross channel ferry after a trip to Bicester and back. The vehicle is seen here on the occasion of the company's 50th anniversary, newly numbered 107 and paused at Calvert crossroads on the Bicester and Claydons service. The Bicester route had a low bridge which 107 could successfully negotiate between Marsh Gibbon and Launton, but normal deckers could not get under. |
