Newly privatised Trent Buses placed great faith in its inherited fleet of Leyland Nationals and they were maintained in a condition which was a credit to the company. However large deliveries of new Optare Excels and Mercedes minis saw their eventual demise.

Looking recently retired, and believed in the early stages of preservation, National 454 (PRR454R) was seen at the 1999 Quainton Bus Rally in June.

Arriving at SHOWBUS 2012 is Leyland National 421 (GNU568N) restored in early privatisation livery.

Destined neither for long service or preservation, this unidentified Leyland National was buckled and burnt beyond recognition in the Derby depot fire alongside a less valuable loss in the shape of 1964 Leyland Leopard 303 (ACH303B).
