We are grateful this week to Ed Goodridge who has been rummaging through his photo collection to find this picture of Stevensons ex Northern General AEC Routmaster 2 (RCN699). It is believed the bus is at SHOWBUS 81 at Ensignbus' premises. The picture is a timely reminder of the trials that SHOWBUS has endured over the years. In 1981 the event was supposed to be an adjunct to the Lambeth Show, but riots in Brixton caused a hasty relocation to Ensign's new base in Purfleet. The second rally was almost scuppered by the three day week during the 1974 miners' strike, resulting in the event then dubbed Brunlezeebus being transferred from Brunal University's February festival, Brunelzebub to the Hillingdon Show in June and christened SHOWBUS for the first time. The event was threatened by nature a few years later when at Woburn Abbey and with widespread flooding across Bedfordshire the Abbey called on the Thursday saying it would have to cancel. Fortunately the Safari Park came to the rescue accommodating half the entry on hard standing at their venue. Now SHOWBUS faces the COVID-19 crisis. It is probably too early to say whether the 2020 event will be able to go ahead, be postponed or cancelled. We are hoping the latter will not happen as it will push our 50th celebrations to 2023! Fingers crossed folks!
