Yarra Trams Siemens Combino 3502 Melbourne Grand Prix
The annual Grand Prix in Melbourne takes place today, but the Albert Park site, which takes months of preparation every year, has been the centre of the festivities since Thursday. The city has been buzzing with helicopters flying visitors direct to the Park and the skies alive with aircraft prforming acrobatics to entertain the crowd. Fashion shows, merchandise stalls, car displays, musical performances, then there's the transport! Most of Yarra Trams routes passing remotely near the Park are substantially altered to focus on transporting F1 patrons at the expense of regular passengers. It also affects the allocation of tram types to routes with the larger E and D2 class trams assigned to Grand Prix routes. In recent years St Kilda Road which skirts the east side of the Park has been used in addition to the 96 route on the reserved track to the west, affecting only the regular 96. Using St Kilda Road affects routes 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 which are heavily duplicated and truncated, some replaced by connecting replacement bus services or tram routes are terminated heading into the city with passengers forced to transfer to the Grand Prix trams. The event also results in an increased number of advert wrapped trams across network wrapped to promote products linked to Grand Prix sponsors. Siemens Combino 3502 was wrapped to promote the 2026 F1 event as well as a more imposing E class tram, 6091. It is seen here on the Friday evening on St Kilda Road heading on a shortened 16 route (186a) to St Kilda's Luna Park - normally the 16 continues over 10km to Kew.
